Something deep in the shadows stirred, smoothly skirting the island of light, ghosting down the hallway past a guard sleeping soundly in an old wooden chair. The column glittered in the sunlight, winding between the hills like a large silver serpent. A large cloud of dust and dirt trailed in its wake. The thunder of ten thousand feet marching in perfect unison shook the earth and roared defiance at any who would dare to challenge them as they returned victorious from their recent engagements along the northern border. He gazed out across the void. It was dark and empty, as it always was. The great nothingness where he was just himself detached from reality and free. He decided it was time to leave.
